About the role
Urras Thiriodh is looking for a friendly, reliable Gaelic speaker to run a handful of regular Gaelic activities for children and families in Tiree. It’s a small, flexible role built around a few sessions a month, and there’s real scope to shape it around your own interests and ideas.
You’d report to Rhoda, the Gaelic Development Consultant, who’ll support you throughout.
Hours and pay
Around 12 hours a month, with flexible timing arranged to suit you and the activities. Pay is £17.50 an hour.
What you’d do
- Run Gaelic Bookbug sessions twice a month — songs, rhymes and stories for babies, toddlers and their grown-ups. Bookbug training will be provided, so you don’t need experience of it beforehand.
- Help lead Sradagan, the Gaelic youth group, once a month, with support on hand.
- Develop simple music activities for parents and toddlers.
- Help organise occasional Gaelic cafes and similar get-togethers.
- Bring your own ideas — we’re open to other Gaelic activities such as singing, art, film, or anything else you’d enjoy leading.
What we’re looking for
- A Gaelic speaker, comfortable using Gaelic with children and families.
- Confident and at ease working with children.
- Access to transport, so you can get around the island reliably.
- Warm, dependable, and happy to lead a small group.
No formal qualifications are needed. Enthusiasm and a bit of Gaelic go a long way.
What we provide
- Bookbug training.
- Support with promoting the events.
- Help with written Gaelic — posters, social media and the like.
- A PVG check, which is standard for anyone working with children.
- Rhoda as your point of contact for anything you need.
Who it might suit
This could suit a parent looking for a few flexible hours that fit around family life, or someone recently retired.
